We need your help please

I was given a bit of bad news today, My dog Jinji is not doing well.
She is a 6 year old Shitzu and was just diagnosed with Adrenal/Kidney failure.

We are asking, "what next?" We have no Idea how long we have left with Jinji but we want to give her the very best until all options are exausted.

The veterinarian has no idea how long we have, basically our job is to keep Jinji comfortable until the inevitable happens and she is no longer with us.

We have no way to pay for more tests or procedures and are already in the $500 area from blood tests, urine sampling, hydration IV's and other procedures I can not remember.

My quest now is for research and success stories to make this bad situation better.

Please email me, post comments with any ideas or stories you have with successes. This is a dog that loves everyone and everyone loves her. She has always been happy go lucky and willing to please everyone she meets.

We are pleading for your help, please pass this post on to everyone you know, We need you ALL!!! Thank you in advance for caring and forwarding this on.

Feel free to contact me in any way you can or are able.

Dear Tammy and Kelly,
I am so sadden to hear of your news. I too had a beloved pet diagnosed with kidney failure. Our vet had been through the same thing with his cat and had kept his healthy for quite a while with IV fluids and a K/D diet (check with your vet) So I learned how to administer the IV and we did them twice a day to maintain him. What I had been told is the "how long" is dependant on the overall health of the pet and how quickly you catch it. I will send up a prayer that you are guided to the right treatment, her health is restored and you are all comforted.
Take care,
Dot

Kelly and Tammy,

It is always very sad to hear that kind of news; especially about good friends like Jinji. I'm a veterinary technician and although I haven't been hands on in a few years I thought it couldn't hurt to have another perspective. In this profession, it does seem there is not much to do for kidney failure but fluids and keeping the patient comfortable. I have a 13 1/2 year-old dog with chronic renal disease which will most likely progress into renal failure. Since learning she had kidney trouble several years ago, she's been on a "kidney diet" (low protein, low phosphorus). We've tried dry Hill's k/d, Waltham's Renal LP, and even a homemade diet. The homemade was tough to do because at the time we had 2 other dogs and homemade for everyone took a lot of time. I'm not sure there's a big difference between k/d and the Renal LP, I'm just not a fan of Hill's so she's been on Renal LP dry (mixed with water for more hydration) for the most part. After getting the same kind of "there's not much we can do", I took her to see a vet who practices holistic medicine. She has since been taking a supplement twice a day called Renafood (made by Standard Process). It's a human supplement for kidney support which you can buy online. She takes Trader Joe's Odorless fish oil twice a day and also 1 Ultra-Strength Tums (absorbs phosphorus) twice a day. This regimen hasn't improved the condition like I was hoping against hope for but the regular DVM is impressed that she has not declined in so many years. That being said, I know what you are facing with Jinji is more urgent than what I'm dealing with but I mention all this because there may be a chance that some little change or tweak to what you've got going may help.

Best wishes and good luck,

Dawn
